Charities

Seaside Fund

When children going on a Star Seaside home holiday clamber on to the bus outside the newspaper’s offices, there is a lot of excitement- almost all of them are off to see the sea for the first time. Typically between the ages of 10 and 13, the kids are sensitively selected from Joburg’s poorest neighbourhoods. Many come from child-headed households and live in conditions of dire poverty.

Operation Snowball

Operation Snowball is a winter charity that provides blankets to those in need over the cold Johannesburg months. It benefits a number of home-based care and orphanages, as well as street kid organizations that are particularly vulnerable during this time. When particularly cold weather is experienced in Johannesburg, the fund kicks into high gear, handing out much-needed blankets to individuals and care organisations.

Christmas Hamper Fund

The Star also hands out hampers at Christmas time to underprivileged residents of Johannesburg. The food parcels go a long way to improving the lives of the recipients who may be struggling to make ends meet, by ensuring the cupboard is not bare at a time of year when no pantry should be empty.
