When children going on a Star Seaside home holiday clamber on to the bus outside the newspaper’s offices, there is a lot of excitement- almost all of them are off to see the sea for the first time. Typically between the ages of 10 and 13, the kids are sensitively selected from Joburg’s poorest neighbourhoods. Many come from child-headed households and live in conditions of dire poverty.
The Star Seaside fund was started in 1910 and has in over a century, sent more than 140 000 children to the coast where they are taken on exciting excursions like visiting the Ushaka Marine, boat rides and the occasional circus visit.
Volunteer helpers and a permanent house-mother see to the caring of the children. Many of the underprivileged kids don’t want to leave the seaside home after their fun-filled stay.
A 9-day Seaside adventure in Natal at our Hibberdene home costs around R2500 per child. The cost of this is funded entirely by donations from the public and generous corporate bodies.
